A grassroots ALS/MND
"Website" with the purpose of Inspiring
Self Empowerment through Information & Knowledge.
This is me, Kyle Hahn. In 1994, at age 36,
I was beginning to realize my dreams. My 20 year
journey as a guitarist was reaching a pinnacle, playing concerts opening for Robin Trower, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and
Foghat.
Having
studied the guitar styles of legends Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton,
Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Carlos
Santana, Lonnie Mack, Billy Gibbons, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Albert King
and Robert Johnson, I always had one foot in the blues and the other on Rock 'n' Roll.
I was working during the day for a government
contractor, supplying the military and law
enforcement agencies, such as the FBI. At
night, I played licks like I’d never hit
before, and we were booked 7 nights a week.
It was during late 1994, I noticed
a weakness in my thumb, that would come and
go. Soon after, I stopped being able to hold
my guitar pick altogether.
As I began to notice
other weaknesses, I realized there was something
terribly wrong. By late ’95, I received the
nightmare diagnosis of ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral
Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
By this time, I was no longer able to hold
my guitar, my gait was jerky and my voice had become
strained and hoarse. Only a few months after the
diagnosis, having switched to playing keyboards, ALS
forced me to adapt my passion with music.
I was
forced to give up the guitar but I picked up another
beat instead. That is to heighten public awareness of ALS and to awaken our legislators to funding more ALS research
and pass laws to make living with ALS a mission of
dignity and quality.
One of the ways I
accomplish this is co-founding and serving as president to the ALS
March of Faces, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising
awareness through self-empowerment. The ALS March of Faces
Banner is a continuing photographic display of People with ALS.
These
pages reflect some of the ways I've been continuing
that beat.
